Voices of the Mayfair

Voices of the Mayfair is a multigenerational art series celebrating the people of the Mayfair neighborhood in East San Jose. It is the product of community members coming together to engage in the process of creating a visual representation of who they are and where they are from. The purpose of the project was to challenge existing stigmas and stereotypes of the Mayfair community.

Prior to this project, participants from the Somos Mayfair organization conducted research to identify “Mayfair Neighborhood Key Priorities.” The process allowed more than 50 residents including parents and young children to engage in the deep and intentional process of identifying key priorities for the neighborhood. One of the priorities stated was the need for public art, community beautification and expression of identity.

The Celebrate Mayfair Project, an initiative of the School of Arts and Culture at MHP, provided a platform for Mayfair residents to come together and achieve that goal: to create art by the community for the community. Renowned local visual artists, Elba Raquel Martinez and Roberto Romo served as the artistic instructors and leads for this project.

Join us July 6th at 6:30pm at the School of Arts and Culture at MHP for the opening reception of Voices of the Mayfair to celebrate the talent of this community! 1700 Alum Rock Ave. San Jose, CA. 95116.
